How to Study the Bible

THE BIBLE IS INFALLIBLE
The Bible in itself is without error and complete and sufficient. Psalms 119 says that the word of God is perfect.
There are four dynamic effects of the word of God in Psalms 119 and they are as follows:
A. The word must be perfect in order to: revive the soul

B. The word must be trustworthy in order to: make the simple wise

C. The word must be right in order to: give joy to the heart

D. The word must be radiant in order to: give light to the eyes

THE BIBLE IS INERRANT
The word of God is 100% pure in all its parts. In the book of 2 Timothy

A. All Scripture is God inspired
That means God spoke it and it is reliable

B. It teaches
That means it teaches us wisdom, principles, divine standards, and divine truth.

C. It rebukes
That means you’re able to go to someone and say, “You are out of line. You can’t behave like that; there’s a standard and you are not keeping it

D. It brings correction
now that you rebuked the person that was out of lined, you can now say do this instead of what you were doing. This is the right path.

E. It trains for righteousness
This shows us the right way to walk, the right way to talk, the right way to act, and the right way to think.

F. It thoroughly equips for every good work
Further more, the word of God will prepare us for the purpose that God called us to. If we follow what the Bible says we will be thoroughly equipped ready for any thing that we encounter.

THE BIBLE IS COMPLETE
The Bible is complete and lacks nothing. Nothing needs to be added. Many people believe that the Bible was written for the people of long ago, and therefore it is not applicable to us today. They feel that the Bible is:

A. Out dated

B. We need a Bible for today

C. There are some things that need be taken out

THE BIBLE IS AUTHORITATIVE
Since the Bible is infallible, without error and complete it stands to reason that it is final in itself. In the book of Isaiah it says, “Hear, 0 heavens, and give ear, 0 earth; for the Lord has spoken.” When God speaks everybody listens, because his is the final authority; the Bible demands obedience.

GOD SAID
Gen 1:3

3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. (NKJ)

Gen 1:6
6 Then God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.” (NKJ)

Gen 1:9
9 Then God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear”; and it was so. (NKJ)

Gen 1:11
11 Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth”; and it was so. (NKJ)

Gen 1:14
14 Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; (NKJ)

Gen 1:20
20 Then God said, “Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens.” (NKJ)

THE BIBLE IS SUFFICIENT
Paul told Timothy that the Scriptures was sufficient to make him wise unto salvation. 2 Timothy 3:15. So many are turning to other sources for their instruction, rather than to trust the word of God as their only source of information.

THE BIBLE IS EFFECTIVE
The Bible is powerful and effective enough to transform and completely change a life around. The Lord spoke about the effect of his word that goes forth from out of his mouth. The science of circulatory will illustrate the effect of his word. In the book of Isaiah Chapter 55:10-11, “As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: it will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it”. The word is very effective.

THE BIBLE IS DETERMINATIVE
The Bible is determinative because how you respond to the word of God determines the essence of your life and your eternal destiny.

A. Your hearing effects your destiny
Jesus said, “He that is of God hears God’s word; you therefore, hear them not, because you are not of God.”
In other words, the determination of whether an individual is of God or not of God is based on whether he listens to the word of God.

B. Your hearing effects your mind
The only way for a mind to be transformed is through the word of God. This transformation will happen when we determine to listen and submit ourselves to the word of God. The carnal mind cannot submit to the truth of God’s word because it is mastered by the sinful nature, but the mind that is full with the Holy Spirit can totally give way to the word because the power of Satan is broken.

WE LEARN BY PROGRESSIVE REVELATION
In the first letter of John there is a tremendous progressive reception of the word of God as it unfolds to us by revelation. And they are as follows.

A. We hear
It’s vital and most important that we hear the word of God continually and retain its truth in our minds. Jesus said, “He that has an ear hear”. Once when Jesus was about to speak, it came about that the multitude pressed in to hear the word of the Lord.

The multitude listens to the Word
Luke 5:1
So it was, as the multitude pressed about Him to hear the word of God, that He stood by the Lake of Gennesaret, (NKJ)

we are blessed when we hear the word and keep it
Luke 11:28
28 But He said, “More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” (NKJ)

B. We see
We are so blessed that we can actually see the word of the Lord being fulfilled right before our own eyes. Jesus once was addressing the religious leaders of his day because they were doubting the authenticity of his claim as the light of the world. The Pharisees claimed to be the descendants of Abraham and that they were never in slavery. They could not see that they had rejected the very Son of God, the living word, the word in the flesh.
Jesus told them that, “Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.”

Matt 13:16-17
16 “But blessed are your eyes for they see, and your ears for they hear;
17 “for assuredly, I say to you that many prophets and righteous men desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.
(NKJ)

Jer 2:31
31 “O generation, see the word of the LORD! Have I been a wilderness to Israel, or a land of darkness? Why do My people say, `We are lords; we will come no more to You’? (NKJ)

C. We look
God wants us to look, searched for him diligently as one pans for gold, or as one searches for silver. It should be our good pleasure to seek into God’s word for ourselves. He has reserved wonderful things for his children in his word.
We see the in psalms 77:6 that in the night he calls to remembrance his godly song to his heart.

As we look at God’s word we must do two things Ps 77:6

A. We must meditate
I call to remembrance my song in the night; I meditate within my heart,

B. We must be diligent
and my spirit makes diligent search.

C. Search from the book
The prophet Isaiah tells us to search from the book of the Lord

Isa 34:16
“Search from the book of the LORD, and read: not one of these shall fail; not one shall lack her mate. For My mouth has commanded it, and His Spirit has gathered them. (NKJ)

D. Seek and you will find
The Lord admonishes the prophet Jeremiah to call upon him
Jer 29:13
And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. (NKJ)

E. Herod told the wise man to seek out the child
Matt 2:8
And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search diligently for the young Child, and when you have found Him, bring back word to me, that I may come and worship Him also.” (NKJ)

After you, hear, look and seek you will most definitely touch the living word.
F. We touch
When we touch the living word there is healing for the whole person. Everyone who touched Jesus was healed from
all their infirmities.

The woman with the issue
Matt 9:21
21 For she said to herself, “If only I may touch His garment, I shall be made well.” (NKJ)

when they recognized Jesus they wanted to touch him
Matt 14:35-36
35 And when the men of that place recognized Him, they sent out into all that surrounding region, brought to Him all

who were sick,
36 and begged Him that they might only touch the hem of His garment. And as many as touched it were made
perfectly well. (NKJ)

All who were afflicted were healed by touching him
Mark 3:10
10 For He healed many, so that as many as had afflictions pressed about Him to touch Him. (NKJ)
I shall be made well.” (NKJ)

All who touched the hem of his garment were made well
Mark 6:56
56 Wherever He entered, into villages, cities, or the country, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and begged Him that they might just touch the hem of His garment. And as many as touched Him were made well. (NKJ)

The multitude sought to touch him for power went out of him
Luke 6:19
19 And the whole multitude sought to touch Him, for power went out from Him and healed them all. (NKJ)

Proverbs 2:1-5

A. My son, if you receive my words
B. and treasure my commands within you,
C. So that you incline your ear to wisdom,
D. and apply your heart to understanding;
E. Yes, if you cry out for discernment,

F. and lift up your voice for understanding,
G. If you seek her as silver,
H. and search for her as for hidden treasures;
I. Then you will understand the fear of the LORD,
J. and find the knowledge of God.
